Everyone knows that taxi cabs can save the day or night when you're out of town and don't have your own personal wheels on hand. You may use a taxi to take you to and from a special event, dinner, or even to run errands if you're on an extended visit to an unfamiliar city. 

If you've never used a convenient taxi service before, there are a few things to know that will make the experience easier. While hiring a taxi to take you from point A to point B is typically a simple process, there are some tip and tricks you can use to ensure a smoother ride for all involved.

In addition to coming in handy when you're traveling, taxi cabs can also be used when you're out on the town with friends and don't have a designated driver, when your vehicle is in the repair shop, or when you need a lift to and from the airport.

Here are some tips to use before and during your taxi cab ride:

1. Compare taxi services by calling them ahead of time. If you have questions about fares, locations, or routes, make a few quick phone calls to local cab companies to make sure their services fit your needs. You may even be able to get a close fare estimate if you give the dispatcher your address and destination. Keep in mind that sitting in traffic or other travel delays may cause the fare to go up.

Also, ask about their busiest times so you know how far in advance you'll need to call to arrange a ride. You don't want to underestimate the amount of time you need and be late for an event, flight, etc. If you will be traveling with an infant, toddler or small child, ask the company about their car seat policies, which may differ from state to state. 

2. Have both debit/credit cards and cash on hand when you use a taxi. Although most cab companies now accept cards, you may prefer to tip your driver in dollar bills. 

3. Make sure to get your belongings from the cab's trunk when you reach your destination. When you're traveling and short on time, you may become flustered and forget your luggage or other personal items. Also, drivers may be in a hurry and forget to remove items from the trunk before taking off to their next destination, so wait to pay until after he or she has retrieved your belongings for you.
